How to move a mattress in 8 easy steps
You've spent months dreaming of buying a beautiful mattress. Now it's moving day, and you must drag him down the stairs and out the door. Moving a mattress can be a 15-minute process or an hour of suffering. We want to make sure your experience comes first and not second. So we've compiled a list of eight steps to make getting around easy.
What to know before moving a mattress
Always try to find a
friend to help you move the mattress. A mattress can range from 20 to 45 pounds
depending on the type. Attempting to lift and move a mattress alone can lead to
physical injury, strained muscles, or a nasty fall, so having a partner is
essential. You will also need to decide how you want to transport the mattress.
Even though it may seem like a simple trick to strap a mattress to the roof of
a car, this can damage the mattress by exposing it to pollutants and other
elements.
It is best to secure
the mattress inside a moving truck or van. This allows for full structural
coverage and allows the mattress to be secured for transport. However, driving
with a heavy load on or behind a vehicle can be challenging. Proceed at a
moderate pace to ensure that the mattress does not move during turns, sudden
braking or acceleration. Especially if the mattress is tied to the roof, stop
and check periodically to ensure it remains secure. Take back paths whenever
you can, and be aware of potential changes.
How to move a mattress in 8 easy steps
1. Cover the
mattress with a bag or towel
Place the mattress
flat on the floor or against a wall. Lift one end as your partner slides the
pouch onto the mattress. Ensure all the air has been expelled from the bag,
then fold the flaps down and seal the open ends with tape. Once sealed, look
for small holes or tears in the bag and patch those as well.
2. Plan a route
Plan the route to the
transport vehicle and remove all objects and debris that could block the
walkway and stairs. Ensure all doors are open and wide enough to allow the
mattress to pass through during transport.
3. Prepare your
transport vehicle
Check that the vehicle
doors are open and the interior clear. If the seats need to be removed or
pushed down, complete this procedure before moving the mattress into the
vehicle.
4. Lift the
mattress
With one person on
each side of the mattress lengthwise, grasp the bottom corners and lift them
together. Avoid lifting with your back. Instead, strengthen your abdominal core
and power the lift with your legs.
5. Place the
mattress on a trolley
Place the mattress
upright on its side and place it on the cart. If the mattress is unstable,
secure both sides with cardboard for support. If the route for your vehicle
includes descending stairs, be careful to stop completely at the top of the
stairs before lifting the mattress from the cart and carrying it down the
stairs. Do not attempt to use a cart to roll a mattress downstairs. If you
don't have a dolly, line the path to the vehicle with cardboard and roll the
mattress across the ground.
6. Load the
mattress into your vehicle
If you're using a van or pickup truck, simply lift the
mattress off the cart into the vehicle's cargo hold. If you have to transport
your mattress on the roof of a car or SUV, it's doubly important that you use a
mattress bags for
moving to protect the mattress fabric
from polluting elements. Be careful when putting the mattress on the roof or
roof rack, and double-check for any breaks.
7. Secure the
mattress
Depending on what kind
of car you're driving using, secure the mattress following the instructions
below.
- Truck / Van:
If possible, lay the mattress flat in the load compartment. Ensure you
aren't stacking the mattress on top of anything else and vice versa. If
the mattress is upright, lay it on its side against the supporting wall.
Use nylon cord or ratchet straps to secure it against the support rails.
If the ratchet strap is too short, connect two to make one large strap.
- Car / SUV (with
roof rack): Lay the mattress flat on top of the roof rack and check that
there are no rips or tears in the sheet covering the mattress. Wrap the
nylon cord or ratchet straps horizontally around the mattress's front,
center and back in a tight knot.
- Car/SUV
(without roof rack): If your car doesn't have a roof rack, lay the
mattress on the car's roof and inspect for rips or tears. Wrap the nylon
cords or ratchet straps around the mattress's body in the front, center
and back (and in the corners, if possible). Thread the ropes through the
front door jams, rear passenger windows and back onto the roof, securing
the mattress to the car.
Can fold mattress
damage it?
Folding a spring
mattress in half damages the structure, leading to less comfortable sleep or,
in extreme cases, a ruined mattress. But polyurethane-based memory foam has
great flexibility and softness, allowing it to bounce back to shape even after
being folded or rolled.
Most mattresses
provide limited warranties with around 10 years of coverage. However, after
purchase, the warranty is voided for physical damage such as cuts, tears,
stains or self-inflicted liquid damage to the mattress cover or frame. That's
why protecting the mattress with a mattress bag is important as planning the
route before moving.
If you are storing
your mattress for an extended period, it is best to use an air-conditioned
container. Humidity and changing temperatures can cause mold and bacteria to
develop. If an attic or basement is the only space available for storage, keep
a dehumidifier near the mattress to regulate rainfall. Lay the mattress flat in
its pouch as it rests on a bed frame. Do not place objects on the mattress
which could damage the structure. However, setting the mattress up on a
platform, pallet, table, or similar object is safe to save space.
Moving to a new home
is stressful, and moving a mattress doesn't make the process any easier.
Chances are you've invested in a high-quality mattress, and leaving it in a
dumpster isn't an option. While bedding can be easily replaced, your mattress
isn't. Take the time to protect your investment and ensure it reaches its final
destination in one piece.
